Matthew 5:3 (ESV)

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Talk About It

Jesus taught about God's upside-down kingdom where everything works differently than we might expect! When Jesus says "poor in spirit," He means people who know they need God's help. It's like admitting you can't tie your shoes and asking someone to help you. In God's kingdom, the people who say "I need You, God" are the ones who get the most amazing gift—being part of God's family forever! The world tells us to be tough and never ask for help, but Jesus says the opposite. When we admit we need God, we discover that His kingdom is full of wonderful surprises. God loves to give good gifts to His children who come to Him with humble hearts, knowing they can't do life without Him.

For Parents to Explain

Dear God, thank You that Your kingdom is full of amazing surprises. Help us remember that we need You every day.

Family Activities

Kingdom Surprise Hunt

  1. Hide small treats or notes around your home with messages like "God loves you" or "You are special to God."
  2. Let kids search for the surprises while you explain that God's kingdom is full of unexpected gifts.
  3. After finding all the surprises, talk about how God gives us good things when we trust Him.
  4. End by praying together, thanking God for His surprising love.

Upside-Down Kingdom Game

  1. Play simple games where you do things backwards—walk backwards, say goodbye when you arrive, or eat dessert first.
  2. Laugh together about how silly everything feels when it's upside-down.
  3. Explain that in God's kingdom, things work differently than the world expects—like how being humble makes you great.
  4. Share one way each person can be "upside-down" special by being kind when others aren't.
